Paula McGarrigle (Author)
Paula is married and has two children: Declan, born in 2004, and Ailish, born in 2005. Paula was raised in Ireland and immigrated to Canada in 1981 as a teenager. She attended the University of Alberta where she obtained degrees in Biology and Chemical Engineering, and Queen’s University where she obtained an MBA. None of this education prepared her for entry into parenthood. Paula currently works full-time in the Canadian wind energy industry. Paula also plays violin locally and is an avid photographer. Paula and her family enjoy playing violin together, walking in the community and playing in the park.
Elena Rhodes (Contributor and co-author of the first edition)
Elena is a mother of Daniel and Anna, born in 2004 and 2005, and a consulting actuary. She moved to Calgary from Tyumen, Siberia in 1995 and graduated from the University of Calgary in 2000. Currently, she balances her work and family life by working part-time. On her non-working days, Elena and her kids take advantage of the many activities that Calgary offers to families with young children. Elena and husband John love hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, backpacking and camping (summer and winter!) and look forward to enjoying these activities with their children.
Dr. Evelyn Jain (Contributor)

Director, Lakeview Breastfeeding Clinic
Dr. Evelyn Jain is a family physician and lactation specialist. She teaches at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor. Through her breastfeeding clinic in Lakeview she has helped thousands of mothers solve their breastfeeding problems and establish a wonderful fulfilling breastfeeding relationship with their babies. She is well-known internationally for her lactation teaching to physicians and Lactation Consultants, and she has developed many teaching and media aids for professionals and parents regarding breastfeeding, including the video and DVD: “Infant Tongue Tie: Impact on Breastfeeding”. Dr. Jain is a mother and a grandmother.
Jill Olson (Contributor)
Jill is married and has three daughters: Julie, born in 2004, and twins Sarah and Chelsea, born in 2006. She obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta and has worked in the oil and gas industry since – taking breaks to have children. Jill and her husband, Doug, are avid skiers and hikers, fitting in some mountain biking, backpacking and camping (mostly before children). Lately their excursions have been focused on the local playgrounds with their children. They will mark the day on the calendar when their children are able to ski along with them (and probably faster). (“Not likely!” says Doug!)
Nicola Sadorra, Paediatric Physiotherapist (Contributor)
Nicola’s joy and toughest job is being mother to Zachary and Maya. Her loving husband, Jack, helps to keep her balanced. Raised in Edmonton, Nicola earned degrees in Psychology and Physical Therapy at the University of Alberta and McGill respectively. Nicola worked in the U.S. where she gained specialty training as a Paediatric Physical Therapist. Back in Calgary, Nicola supplements her part-time work as a Physical Therapist with a new business, Tiny Talk and Walk, providing gross motor and sign language instruction to families and childcare facilities. When Nicola isn’t working, she likes to camp, hike, bike and ski with her family.
Dr. Wendy Street-Wadey DDS (Contributor)
Dr. Wendy Street-Wadey is a native Calgarian and mother to a preschool-aged daughter, Julia. Wendy attended the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario and graduated with a Doctorate of Dental Sciences (DDS) in 1988. After graduation, Wendy worked in private practice in Northern Ontario for one year, and then returned to Calgary, where she ran her own practice in the Chinook Centre Professional Tower until the birth of her daughter. Since the early 1990’s Wendy has been a part-time clinical instructor for the dental assisting program at SAIT. Dr. Street-Wadey is a member of the Calgary Society for Advanced Dentistry Study Club, the Calgary and District Dental Society, the Alberta Dental Association, the Canadian Dental Association, and is an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Calgary Fish Creek.
Dr. Pat Tarr

Pat Tarr is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education where her specializations in early childhood and art education come together in her research around the Reggio Emilia Approach to education. She has a special connection to very young children, having taught in a parent-toddler preschool program for six years at the University of British Columbia. Pat is also a mom to a grown daughter and a grandmother.
